I will be visiting San Diego in early October. I've been before and seen the tourist attractions, so this time I'd like to feel as though I'm "living" there rather than being a visitor. Any suggestions on which suburbs would be good options for a lates female?
I'll be renting an apartment so a residential area would fine doesn't need to have hotels. If it helps, I like being social and going for a few drinks, but I'm not into clubbing or lots of partying. I also like the outdoors hiking, horse-riding, running but will have a car so can drive if I'm not staying nearby. We use words differently here in the USA.
We have beach areas as well as more urban feeling areas. With a car you can get around to many parts of the city and the surrounding county easily. When you find something you think is OK then post a link for us to discuss. I think being somewhere near Balboa Park would be nice. IF you look in the city neighborhood of La JollaI which is also beach and upscale be aware that it is a large area and many parts are not really at the beach so using Google maps or posting links for us will be important.
Thanks for the reply and thanks for translating : I mean a neighborhood rather than specifically suburban and will have a car so can easily get around. I'd prefer somewhere that isn't too urban - I've lived in the middle of big cities a few times!
I've heard that Encinitas and Carlsbad are nice - what do you think? Last time I stay I was in a dodgy motel in San Ysidro : I was only there for a couple of nights while on a road trip. Our downtown is quite small and even the more "urban" areas are mostly low rise buildings and private homes not towering skyscrapers or tall apartment buildings.
Some of our apartment buildings look like 2 story motels. Any of the areas surrounding the park might be a great place for you. Carlsbad and Encinitas are suburbs outside of the city. We have beach neighborhoods within the city too like Pacific BeachMission Beach and then there's La Jolla which is just north of Pacific Beach and includes areas along the ocean and then inland towards the I-5 freeway.
IF you look at a map you'll understand better. IF I wanted a taste of San Diego I'd stay in one of those city neighborhoods and then explore farther out while I was here. Definitely not the downtown area. Coast Hwyparts of South Park. Let us know when you narrow it down to a few neighborhoods and when you have some rental units in mind. We may be able to help you then. Maybe Carlsbad. Del Mar and La Jolla you would probably find too tourist-centered. Mission Hills if you find something. Not too many tourists in October in La Jolla. After Labor Day there is a drastic drop in the of tourists.
It will be mostly locals going about their business. Thanks all so much for the advice! I'll be back when I have looked at some accomodation options and maybe I can get some more advice :.
